The Green Car Revolution
In the last 4 years there’s been an astronomical rise in electric car sales in the UK. 2013 saw 3,500 electric cars being registered and numbers have now soared to a whopping 145,000 as recently as April 2018. Industry experts are estimating this number could rise to 200,000 by the end of 2018.
What’s this rapid rise down to? More research around pollution and the impact of carbon emissions on the environment and there’s been a big shift in public attitudes towards green cars. From perceptions of burdensome charging and unfashionable design to more sophisticated technology, a better public recharging network and more choice for consumers.
Driving green isn’t a pipe-dream for consumers anymore and ‘cool’ electric cars aren’t just confined to futuristic films – it’s now a much more accessible option for drivers, with more manufacturers launching green cars every year and the UK government’s Plug-in Car Grant running until 2020.
It’s no secret that emissions from large numbers of cars on UK roads significantly contribute towards an air quality problem. Increasing urbanisation and car numbers have led to more and more harmful chemicals being pushed into our atmosphere.
Another reason for the gradual climb in pollutants is the number of diesel cars being bought in the UK over the last 20 years. Consumers were misled over the environmental impact of diesel and believed it was better than driving a petrol vehicle. In fact, diesel exhausts pumps pollutants into the air such as PM10 and PM2.5 particles.
There has to be an actionable plan and serious conversations around tackling air pollution as scientists warn that around 40,000 deaths a year can be linked to dirty air, which is more than deaths from obesity and alcohol. Pollution’s a public health concern that will put more strain on our economy, communities and public services.
It’s imperative as a society that we start finding and implementing more environmentally friendly ways to live and work. We’re heading in the right direction as the government announced last year that the sale of exclusively petrol or diesel cars will be banned by 2040.
The need for us to find ethical alternatives is more important than ever as we receive more and more evidence and research around the impact of pollution. We can already see a decline in diesel car sales which is welcome news, as 35% of the car market is made up of diesel cars, instead of 50% 6 years ago.
Some councils have proposed diesel surcharges and the government is thinking of introducing charging zones for older diesel cars. As of May 2017, there are also 4,300 charging locations, 6,700 charging devices and 12,500 connectors in the UK.
With fewer and fewer reasons to drive cars with high emissions, we think that electric vehicles are the perfect solution and the ethical, forward-thinking option for the future.
- Decrease your personal impact on the environment with no fuel, no emissions.
- Save money on running costs and fuel costs whilst benefiting from government schemes and grants.
- Lower long-term maintenance costs because of combustion engines with tens of parts instead of hundreds.
- Fantastic driving experiences with state-of-the-art tech and acceleration capability.
- Increased range and more charging locations means you won’t be caught short and can drive for hundreds of miles without the need to refuel.
- Popular, ethical and an innovative way to get around.
How can you get involved?
1000s of people are joining the green car revolution and here at 3F EV, we want to make driving electric vehicles as inclusive and accessible as possible.
